Riding for a fall
Big Media is in the hubris -> nemesis stage right now. God help them. It may not happen right away, but absent a miracle, their influence can only head in one direction: down.
This isn't the Internet Election (that's 2008), but we're close. And I don't think either side has truly grasped the extent to which the disintermediating effects of the new technologies render their existing strategies moot. I think something that is becoming increasingly clear on both sides is that their media directors are clueless incompetents. A ferinstance: I thought Bush was being masterfully disingenuous in condemning the 527 ads wholesale. After all, the Donks have raised a lot more money into the ad market via 527s than the Pachs. Bush could be seen to rise above the fracas: Not In My Name. But no, he had to go and spoil it by endorsing McCain's cry of Uncle to the FEC. Sometimes I think Karl Rove is a genius, but I have to wonder when I see things like this. The White House should disavow any connection with McCain. He's poison. I have to marvel at the author of an unconstitutional free-speech-restricting law squeaking when its effects become manifest. Dump this idiot. So he spent five years having the Viet-Cong driving bamboo splinters under his fingernails, or whatever. If one is being honest, this no more qualifies you as moral arbiter than driving a militarised cabin cruiser somewhere close to Cambodia makes you eligible to be President.
